Usually the little dogs have dental problems first, and big dogs not until later in life. If he's only one and already having dental problems, you should take him to see a vet. Dogs need their teeth cleaned just like people do. Prices will vary, but $150 or less is a good price. Depending on your vet, the procedure may require full anesthesia. Your dog's teeth will be scaled and polished, and a protective sealant such as OraVet or ProVSeal may be applied. You may want to talk to your vet about home care, either in brushing his teeth regularly or with special dental chew toys. They even have additives you can use to "spike" his water bowl that kill the bacteria which cause tarter buildup and gum disease. OraVet now has a take home kit- you apply the gel to his teeth once a week, and it forms a protective barrier around each tooth that prevents bacteria from being able to attatch.

Dogs are as individual as people when it comes to oral health. Some have good teeth naturally, others don't.
