I got my dog (Lucy) at the local pound about 5 years ago. Someone had left a litter of puppies at their door. She's a Border Collie / Springer Spaniel cross and she is without a doubt, the best dog I have ever had.
Right from the start, we had trouble heeping her locked in the back yard. She would either dig under the fence or, as she got older, jump over it. Eventually, we gave up trying to keep her locked up and trained her to just stay home. I'm not kidding, this took less than 1 hour. She will go to the edge of the property and not cross it. We can leave her alone while at work etc. and she still stays at home (I've checked with the neighbors)
When I take her for a walk, I do not put a leash on her. I tell her to heel and she stays right next to me. Even when another dog comes along.
When I give her a treat, she gently takes it from my hand and will not eat it in front of me. I have to turn away or leave before she'll eat it.
Lucy LOVES water. I live close to a river and take frequent walks there. She will spend every possible second in the water. She'll even stick her head under the water if she's looking for a stick to play with.
Her bad habits..... She likes to lay down in mud puddles. She rips apart most of her chew toys and she poops withen 5 seconds of getting out of the car.
