Posted by TDavis on 5/20/2002, 3:18 pm Speaking of conventions, the 2003 convention will be Memorial Day weekend in May at Thunder Bay, Ont., Canada. The 2004 convention will be the third weekend of May at Grand Forks, while 2005 will be a great combination convention at Mason City with the Chicago & North Western Historical Society (which Gordy thought up and is leading. I hope to assist him a lot on that one as I will enjoy not having to choose which convention to attend like I usually do because they are both always on the third weekend of May.) Eau Claire has a new division, the Chippewa Valley Division, and may host the 2006 convention. TLR conventions in the U.S. are always the third weekend (Canada's Memorial Day), while those hosted by the folks north of the border are always our Memorial Day weekend. Each helps each other with travel. Mike Penn has indicated he wants the fall TLR board meeting at the Hutchinson show on Oct. 12. (The TLR president selects the site.) So I'll be tied up part of the show at that board meeting, which should attract about six other board members and perhaps a few representatives from divisions. We will need the clinic room for about 3-4 hours in the afternoon, perhaps beginning about 1 p.m. That means also that clinics will be limited to 2 or 3 this year. As for my idea to host a sub-region, I floated the idea to several division and region members. It was well received. TLR leaders suggested I take it directly to the divisions we've talked about PLD, MRVD, Twin Cities and Dakota Southeastern. I will revise my proposal and send it and a cover letter telling a little bit about the LLRC and our show to the superintendents of those four divisions.
Fellow LLRC members:
Just to let you know, I was elected to the board of directors of the Thousand Lakes Region of the National Model Railroad Association at the TLR's annual convention in Sioux Falls, May 18-19. I was nominated from the floor by fellow LLRC and Minnesota River Valley Division member John Larsen of Willmar. In a 10-person race for five positions, I placed fifth and will assume the lone one-year term that was available. The other four terms were for two-years.
During the board's officer caucus, I was selected vice president under new President Mike Penn of the Twin Cities Division (remember his fabulous backdrop painting clinic at our show two years ago.) Good friend Gordy Miller, who recently completed his term as Prairie Lakes Div. superintendent, was elected to the board, too, and named public relations director. We will work together closely as my main duties as VP are related to division/region relations and Gordy can help with that, while I can assist him and the convention director with publicity for future convention.
