Hi Geoff,
I am planning to install an electric outboard on my boat May Belle. Having spoken with various suppliers including Ludham Bridge Services, I am intending to buy the Minn Kota Endura or Maxxim 50 or 55 model. These will be coupled to a couple of ~100 Ah batteries which should give several hours of cruising. Based on experience I get with this I may increase this. Placing the batteries low down near the centreline of the boat will add extra ballast! But for the Boat Safety Scheme they need to be securely held and ventilated.
No one has recommended the use of electric motors in a seaway though, but in the tidal rivers of the Broads the above motor has been considered to be sufficient. As with all forms of propulsion, sensible use of the tides to assist passage making will help to increase battery life.
