Posted by John McCartney Remember, in a real emergency, if you have the right wind (ie NOT onshore and not too strong, you can beach a bilge-keeler, but watch out for the offshore sandbanks - if you are forced to beach it's best if you can walk to the nearest harbour to get help.

re the bobbly bits: I sailed my Lysander along the south coast between Eastbourne and The Needles, and I would say:
1) pick your weather - you don't want a north wind blowing onshore; ideally for the Wash and the N Norfolk coast you want anything between west and south-east. And you really don't want more than a forecast force 4.
2) take proper equipment - mini-flares are good but if you're coast-hugging a mobile phone is a must. For most of the Norfolk coast Vodafone is the best network (I now live in Norfolk).
3) only enter the N Norfolk harbours at or close to high water, or you'll go aground. Wells bar is a particular bugger. Try to follow a local in!
