I would have said you don't need to. Just don't run it dry. A three foot tall fence to mount the outboard on and a dustbin 3/4 full of water to immerse the water pump/gearbox on is all I use to check everything works. The water pump should prime when immersed. If you don't feel happy with that maybe soft soap, silicone spray or KY jelly, vaseline apparently isn't used by plumbers as it perishes the seals in pipe fittings so that and any other mineral lubricants I wouldn't use. I haven't reserched this, its off the top of my head but it sound reasonable, so all the best
