Lori,
I integrate weekly into a 6-8th grade classroom which consists of mildly mentally handicapped students. You may want to photograph the classroom in an activity and then have the students arrange the photographs in order.
I also find that these students have considerable difficulty with the months, seasons, holidays. I used the die cutter at school and cut several shapes of a single design out of construction paper. I wrote the name of a month on a single paper (all 12 months). I then found stickers and/or clip-art to depict a major event for the month. I think I have 2 events for each month, again, each one on a single piece of paper.
The students are required to put the months in order and match an event to a month. They can also use the months to visualize the grouping of seasons. I've had some real "aha" moments when they see the seasons/months. I always introduce this task by stating "we all know the months of the year, let's review them together" and then we state them in unison. I get some looks from the students like "this is easy" however very few could do any of these tasks independently (I've tried).
I've also taken comics and cut them apart and had the students put them in order. Good luck!
