Kar El, I don't think that the Chagos court battle is over yet. Although the 3 judges have refused the Secretary Of State for Foreign Affairs permission to Appeal and also a Stay of Execution, the UK Govt can petition the House of Lords to get permission to Appeal. They have 28 days to act. Last year they waited at the 11th hour to lodge their Appeal.
As it stands right now, technically the Chagossians can board a ship and head home if they so wish but this will require lots of money to charter the ship, plus a thorough plan to faciltate a visit, or even a temporary settlement. Remember the other 2 main islands, Solomon and Peros Banhos have been abandoned for 40 years. No water, no electricity, no dwellings etc , so any meaningful settlement should really be undertaken by the UK Govt, something they do not wish to contemplate at all at the moment. As far as the Mauritian Govt is concerned , they are not in the picture right now, legally or otherwise. They do not hold Sovereignty over the Islands, although they believe they do!
