Good one 99. First-rate article, with detached arguments and diplomatic conclusion to boot, in contradistinction to Biguel’s lyrical style, hey. The question that held my interest was how a referendum on this issue (if offered) would fare. Here’s a hint: Scarcely four centuries ago, when an Italian philosopher, Giordano Bruno, suggested that the Earth wasn’t the centre of the Universe, the government of the day, after a lengthy trial, yes, a trial, dragged him to a central market square, with his tongue in a gag, tied him to a pole naked, and burned him at the stake. The good people of the town came in droves to cheer, and jostled for position so as not to miss a beat and, while old Bruno slowly cooked, sweet old ladies added their little bundles of wood to the fire and sung hymns.
Ok, then we used a feather dipped in ink, today, we tap on a keyboard, but has the human condition really evolved that much since? Standing piously, at the beginning of question time, in the morning, reciting the Lord’s prayer, then, in the afternoon legislating for the State to ceremoniously kill a human being, would not be a good indicator.
