I'm looking for more information on my great grandfather Louis Joseph who is said to have been born in Mauritius around 1856. He came to South Africa and married my great grandmother Mary Ann Baikum Royeppen at the age of 25 at St. Cyprian's Anglican Church in the port city of Durban in 1881. We know nothing else about him, but are trying to trace his origins in Mauritius or find out whether he was perhaps from India, but was just passing through Mauritius on his way to SA. He couldn't speak any English and must have been illiterate, because there's just a cross on his marriage certificate in lieu of a signature. Louis's ancestors in SA are classified as Indian or Asian. But we'd very much like to know if he too was Asian. We've heard that it would've been unusual for an Asian in Mauritius to have the surname Joseph.
Thank you in anticipation of your help,
Joanne Joseph
