From my experience in travelling to Mauritius this is not untypical when dealing with some people (not all). Sadly the desire to relieve visitors of their money outweighs morality and honesty with some. You seem to have a legal agreement but getting any legal satisfaction in Mauritius may be costly and take a long time.
To rent a bungalow short term to tourists I understand the owner should have the bungalow registered. You may wish to ask for confirmation of this in your email - that may alert the bungalow operator that you are not as naive as he may think. If all else fails report the matter to the Mauritius Tourist Authorities, the Mauritius Revenue Authority and the Tourism Minister.
