Hi Amanda,
Your ambition is a brave one.
I am a Mauririan expat in Australia. having mifrated first to ht UK and then to Australia and expereinced the loss of identity that result from that, the brif comment here may be of some help.
But first, i happen to be also a psychosocial scientist with a deep interest in cultural identity.
if there is one over-riding truth about culture is that it is lived and its expression is deeply related to a set of norms and values realted to a specific place, people and time. what Mauritian culture do you wan the one in the North, south East or West. Or do you want the 21st century versin as opposed to the 19th century version. Or perhaps, you want the version that identifies yy as Mauritian within an australian context. It is only when you decide the point of departure that you can begin to develop a suitable cultural program for your baby.
as you Know Mauritius being an ethnic melting pot, you can have as many cultural offshots as you have ethic permutations.
My advice for a realistic program is to from a ntwork of Mauritian connections with whom you shae similar feelings and ideas of Mauritius and being Mauritian. Secondly, this group will have to be phsically engaged with each other on regular on a regular basis, specially for particualr Mauritian celebrations where Particualr foods are consumed and particualr Mauritian activities are engaged into: sega for example. Talikng the Mauritian lingo is another one. The group must be imaginative in creating a common Mauritian concept and of being Mauritian. Organising trips to Mauritius in groups is also another avenue.
The point is, such a cultural structural endeavour is in the imagition and it is in the engagement of that and also the regular routines at home that the child acquires a cultural identity.
Well, good luck, and for heaven's sake, be patient. cultural identitifacation is over years - not days or months.
If you don't like the above, just delete.
If i can be of further assistance, let me know.
I am also a group specialist.
Harold
