Jean Vincent Cassim was a penniless convict from Mauritius, who abruptly turned his life around on foreign soil. In 1860 he secured an investment loan of $ 600 to build his own resort hotel in Cleveland, south east of Brisbane. The hotel comprised bar, parlour, sitting-rooms, bedrooms, storeroom, a kitchen with servant's room attached, and verandahs front and back. The grounds included stables, coachhouse, fowlhouse, landscaped garden, jetty and a covered swimming pool. Jean Vincent, a devout Catholic, was well known and respected in Cleveland, he would never accept payment from any priest staying at his hotel.
Cassim's Island, postcode 4163 in Moreton Bay and Cassim Place, Redland Bay 4165 were named after him.
Today in 2009, the historic Cleveland Hotel at 105 Shore Street, Cleveland Point is still standing firm, and now preciously heritage listed. Visits to the site, can be arranged by contacting the Queensland Heritage Council.
There are just a few Mauritian families currently living in the Cleveland and Redlands area.
The biography of Jean Vincent Cassim, by Father Patrick J. Tynan is a dedication to all those successful convict entrepreneurs, who laid the foundations of the Queensland's State.
