That is an interesting comparison. I think Andy was a better parent to Opie than Sam was to Mike. Part of the reason for this is that the father-son relationship between Sam and Mike was not nearly as well developed as that of Andy and Opie. Also, Mike grew up awful fast--in the first season he is this cute little kid, and by the third season he is practically a teenager. While I'm on the subject, the changes in society's attitude toward how parents should deal with their children probably had an influence on Sam's parenting as well. Still, as TV dad's go, they are both in the top ten in my book.
