Posted by sym on 7/2/2006, 8:57 pm This is my story... On examination to vet noted that he had swollen genitals and the swollen eyes and runny nose which were both classic syptoms of myxo I was given baytril (antibiotic)to administer twice a day. Rexy got quite bad over the next week, (very swollen and very laboured bubbly breathing) and i considered putting him down..(you need to draw the line somewhere) but he kept eating so i held out) (WK2)I took him back to the vet to see if there was anything else i could do, but there was nothing else, the vet didnt sound to optumistic but said as long as he kept eating he might get over it. and didnt charge me for the consult. I had a steam vaporiser with eucalyptus oil going nearly all day and night next to him in the laundry (which i believe saved his life!) i used warm salt water and a wash cloth about 4-5 times a day to keep his eyes and nose clean..(bottom bath once a day)and gave him lots of pats. (WK3)-current)He seems to have turned the corner to recovery now and the caring load has lightened a little, ive cut back on vaporiser and boosted his antibotics by 3ml WOW thats a long post!! but hopefully it will help someone else, i didnt come across alot of informative info when i was searching!

Hi, Just wondered if anyone on the board has had success with treating their bunny with myxomatosis?
I am currently nursing my daughters 8mth mini rex imaginatively named 'REX' back to health, he has had myxo for about 3weeks now but seems to be coming good! It has been intensive caring for him and there was a day or 2 I considered have him put to sleep but he perked up and kept eating on his own so i kept hope. Any way, just thought it may be of some help to others if 'survivers' posted there methods of care so it might help others treating myxo.
(WK 1)Rexy had been looking a bit sad for about a week and i just put it down to a change of food i had given him, then i noticed his eyes started to look a little swollen so i took him to the vet.
I would also take him outside for a change during the day and give him a little blind wander (his eyes were swollen shut) and that seemed to make him happier.
He seems happier and more active (despite the inconvenience of not being about to breath properly) and is still pigging down his food, eyes are opening slightly and breathing sounds 'less' bubbly and laboured.
