I have 2 bunnies. One desexed male and one desexed female. The male is a mini rex and was purchased from a pet shop. I owned him about 3 years before acquiring the female. The female is a much smaller long haired rabbit. We rescued her, as she was abandoned and being terrorized by cats and children. We house them in separate cages. When we put the cages near each other, the rabbits appear to like one another. They smell each other and get up on hind legs to touch noses. I read up on how to introduce rabbits, and based on what I read, attempted to introduce the male and female in neutral territory. At first they just ran around and she was a bit frightened. Then the male (appropriately named Romeo) wanted to mount her (definitely not his Juliet) and a major fight, or what looked menacing to my husband and I, ensued. I am afraid they will hurt each other. Should I just keep them separate? I think they would be happier(especially the male) if they could be companions.
