I do not see racing returning to Great Barrington. The town is not supportive of racing, and Mr. Henry Vara sold the fairgrounds a number of years ago to a developer. For racing to return it would require someone very wealthy with a love for fair horseracing and who could endure the year-after-year financial losses. I was fortunate to attend GBF for the first time with their return to racing 1997, then again in 1998 during their final year.
In my opinion, the only hope for MA fair racing is at the Brockton Fairgrounds, and their chances would be very slim at best. I believe the Carney's were hoping for slots legislation when they raced in 2001 (after a 29-year absence).
