I agree with Derek that many union membership conditions need relooked at and updated to take into account the position now where many/most of us either work for small companies or are self employed as I am. I would like to be part of a union of people, working or otherwise and the TUC should I think allow and encourage self employed people and people either not employed or not in conventional employment, eg carers, homeworkers and childrearers to become part of the union movement.
I disagree with Derek's support for strikebreakers, tough as their life maybe. If the Posty's had not gone on strike they ( the strikebreakers) would not have had the opportunity to earn an extra few pounds anyway so it seems to me they are taking advantage of the strike and so undermining the democratic will of another group of impoverished group of workers. The Posty's have democratically decided to strike to attempt to force the management of the Post Office to improve their conditions of work and pay. Solidarity is the most powerful tool the poor and powerless have and to undermine it is a pretty low thing to do imo.
