The BBC keeping, so it would have us believe, to a stricly impartial "it said" line. But note the obvious 'consequential' implication between sentence one and two.
"Israel launched a devastating assault on Gaza in December and January aimed, it said, at stopping rocket fire by Palestinian militants. Rocket fire since the assault has diminished dramatically."

No other explanation need be assumed, other than that Israel did act in self-defence and has been justified in its actions.
Where, one doesn't bother to wonder, is the promised application of this:
"The Goldstone report concluded that Israeli operations "were carefully planned in all their phases as a deliberately disproportionate attack designed to punish, humiliate and terrorise a civilian population". We’ve reported this widely and will be part of our characterisation of the war in the future."
