A round of applause for Spooks (you know, the TV series loosely based on the not-so-secret intelligence services).
But also a thumb down - especially for the dumb down.
Highly Americanized sequencing of scenes, increased use of "mood music" in the background, loss of complexity in the plot, more reliance on the nicer parts of the relationships between the characters.
Are they going for the American audience ?
Also, although one of my relatives was put off by the amount of violence, the series makers must have had "anti-incitement-to-violence" training as very few actual acts of violence were in shot throughout the whole programme. The only "linger" shot was of a child that as spared "execution". The torture was psychological rather than physical. They must be under orders to prevent the incitement to hate and violence.
Also - neat moves - they included a reference to the complicit-with-torture story, and invented a nice "plant" hoax - that an American plan to plant "weapons-grade uranium" in Iraq prior to "disclosure" was thwarted.
Another neat move was to cast Republican Christians as nasties. Let's see now - easy to demonise Republican Christians. Did you see the actual news footage of those Republican Christians that stayed firmly in their seats when Angela Merkel addressed Congress about Global Warming the other day ?
