Are you referring to the "Blessing of the Sick" rite of the Catholic Church? That was done for me after my lumpectomy. I was kind of out of it at the time and not really aware what was going on...my husband requested it. It's not extreme unction (had that too...long story, so will spare you... You've gotten wonderful advice from Diane and Jacks...I can't add much to what these wise ladies have mentioned, just know that you and your lovely wife are in my prayers for smoother days ahead. 
) but it was comforting to me. Let Erin make the call as Jacks suggested...it may be just what the doctor ordered.
