Tom,
I was an infantry officer, but elected to go Functional Area 50 - Force Management. I work in Army G-8 in the Pentagon. We equip the force.
Have spent most of holiday dealing with Leslie's medical situation. Based on symptoms the docs at Walter Reed went ahead and conducted a bone scan. Unfortunately, the cancer has metasticized to the bones with lesions noted in numerous locations throughout the skeleton. This was totally unexpected by everyone to include the docs. However, good news is that it has not moved to brain or any other vital organs based on MRI and CT scans. This now makes her Stage IV. Docs tell us that her Cancer is not curable, but treatable; however, her chances of surviving beyond 5 years even with treatment is only 16%. Thus, the odds are against her. Next test will be bone marrow biopsy to confirm that cancer has moved to bones. Based on result, treatment will begin. Looks like they want to try the hormone therapy due to the type of cancer cells she has. More to follow.
The only good news as the docs continually point out to us is that there are no absolutes with cancer. Anything is possible - both good/bad. It all comes down to how she responds to treatment; however, statistics are not good. I have learned alot since this roller coaster ride has begun and realize that anything can happen.
