Really, if you go to the police it is the best thing for you. It's not just his word against yours - it's your word against his. Both are equal, and in the "bare minimum" at least you have a police report number pulled and some history about the situation. You can even say you are going to the library and just go by yourself and hit the police station instead - that way you are private, and safe.
