this link was sent to me earlier this morning...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080430/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/slaughterhouse_abuse
Particularly disturbing is the slap on the hand attitude of to Cargill.
Note the author of the article cites the use of public records available to the AP to obtain the info. likewise the article seems to focus on the mistreatment of the animals, even to the point of detracting from the issue of "sick animals" entering the food chain in the recent beef recalls, to emphasize the mistreatment of those same sick animals.
While there was a recall in that incident...the actual cause for the
Cargill plant being shut down is not mentioned.
This is a very large industry, whose products are shipped worldwide and whose profits play a major influence in our economy. These people and thier money are powerful and influential, much like the growers in southern CA, in the region which the tainted spinach was grown. There was a time when Lettuce was mentioned in the same timeframe and Taco Bell...suddenly the emphasis was shifted to green onions. If Taco Bell had been placed in the position to recall lettuce...every one of it's stores would had to have closed...it could have bankrupted the chain. Likewise, if growers in CA were forced to abandon their watering practices of using treated sewage water to water their crops, it would have crippled if not destroyed the industry.
There is a matter of lesser evils to consider here, and as well those who would make decisions on the same, lawmakers, industry inspectors...etc.
When Billions of dollars are on the line, "2 or 3 people possible getting sick" is an oversight so long as nobody dies...perhaps I am paranoid. But then last spring a representative of the Agricultural industry..."big farming" was amongst those in my mailing list, and the same individual reprimanded me for my suggestions to buy produce from local growers, and assured me that I was wrong to have called for prison sentences for those whose negligence resulted in the death of a little girl in the fall of 06' , likewise she assured me I was wrong in my forecast that the event would repeat itself. This was as I said, during the spring.
On August 24, 2007, 6 states recalled tainted carrots...
the Carrots came from the same region the spinach came from, and officials scratched their heads publicly...as if they did not know the reason for the e-coli outbreak.
To me the math is simple...
E-coli---Ca Ca,
E- Coli---Ca, Ca...
Put sewer water of plants...people die from e-coli...
I mean come on...e-coli is not borne of random chaotic sources...it comes from one place...fecal matter...human fecal matter. Gimme a break.
You might take the info of the article sent to me today to heart, and wait until we hear a little more before buying any Cargill beef, and remember the timeline of June to stop altogether.
The dismissive attitude of chance a couple people getting sick is not worth the risk...it resulted in death of a child. You or I may not place a monetary value on human life, nor think one can be...but to someone in the position of losing millions, if not billions of dollars...or several in the same position...even a Governing body fearing the collapse of order...one would wonder if there are "acceptable losses" of those of us ranked as consumers.
Buy Rice, Buy Beans.
I reccommend you start stocking up on canned greens at this time.
I have taken the photos of some dandelion greens I picked by the roadside last week, prepared and ate...for the purpose of documenting it for instructional video. When it is through, I will post it here. Likewise, I will try to start posting other information about wild edibles which grow in abundance in this country.
