23 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.
Again, the talebearer is emphasized, one combination, Burning lips and a wicked heart...are likened to another combintation...usless, ugly, and potentially dangerous a broken piece of pottery covered by the impurities left over from the silver refining process...
Potsherd
Pronunciation:
\ˈpät-ˌshərd\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English pot-sherd, from pot + sherd shard
Date:
14th century
: a pottery fragment usually unearthed as an archaeological relic
DROSS
Pronunciation:
\ˈdräs, ˈdrȯs\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English dros, from Old English drôs dregs
Date:
before 12th century
1 : the scum that forms on the surface of molten metal 2 : waste or foreign matter : impurity 3 : something that is base, trivial, or inferior
The nature of potsherd being archeological should not be overlooked...likewise the prophetic nature of the rest of this chapter....
consider what would happen to one who fell on such on item...a broken piece of pottery with metallic impurites...one would likely be poisoned...such are the words of a talebearer.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
Continually we are warned of those who speak flatteries to us. There are those who speak of peace with thier fingers upon triggers. Jim Croce sung in his song "Which Way Are You Going" :
Which way are you goin'
Which side will you be on
Will you stand and watch while all the seeds of hate are sown
Will you stand with those who say that His will be done
One hand on the Bible, one hand on the gun
One hand on the Bible, one hand on the gun
Which way are you looking?
Is it hard to see
Do you say what's wrong for him is not wrong for me
You walk the streets of righteousness
But you refuse to understand
You say you love the baby, but then you crucify the man
You say you love the baby, but then you crucify the man
Chorus:
Everyday things are changin'
Words once honored turn to lies
People wonderin' can you blame them
It's too far to run and too late to hide
Now you turn your back on all the things that you used to preach
Now it's let him live in freedom if he lives like me
Well your line has changed, confusion rings
What have you become
Your olive branches turn to spears when your flowers turn to guns
Your olive branches turn to spears when your flowers turn to guns

I borrowed this video from another source...I don't know who made it, but I wholeheartedly agree with one comment left in a blog commetary of the same...
"capatalism isn't a pyramid scheme, but it is completely f*@!**g amazing how relevant this song is today. it's weird too 'cause croce didn't write many others like this... if any. "
I am a big Croce Fan, and he didn't write anything else like this.
So In verses 24, and 25 we are told not to believe the words of a Hateful person, who disembleth with their lips...and warned that even when they speak well...7 abominations lay in their heart to every one good thing. This is not always an easy thing to do...the deciet which he lays up within himself in verse 24 is used to cover and hide his hatefullness in verse 26, but we are promised in verse 26 that his wickedness shall be shown before the whole congregation...it is then we must not believe such a one...even when he comes again speaking good things and in flatteries hides his hatred to those new persons whom have not known of his deeds.
And those with expereince of the hateful man, are in the unique position of caring for the growth of those same new persons being exposed to his rhetoric...counsel to those, comes in the form of comfort offered in the prophetic passage following:
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
those with expereince of the hateful man, may rest from worry, as this is the means wherewith his his wickedness is shown to the whole congregation as spoken in verse 26. Those with the experience of such a one, are to pray for those without experience to the same...as they will be exposed to lies and flatteries...
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
Proverbs are more than merely observations of the prudent and righteous...they are prophetic in their application to present events, and sound counsel to those seeking direction. I highly reccomend if you are unfamiliar to them, that you read one chapter a day. Try it and see what happens...if you sons, or know young men...it would be in thier very prudent interests to heed such counsel, considering the rewards of doing so as mentioned in chapter one.
