GREELEY, Colo. -- This week's severe weather has done more than rattle nerves, it's ruined millions of dollars in crops.
Thousands of acres of crops in Weld County were battered by the hail on Wednesday.
Many farmers are now assessing whether to plow things under and plant again, file insurance claims for their losses or hope the crops bounce back.
"There were four to five inches of hail on the ground," said farm owner Alex Karrol.
In the past 20-plus years on this farm, Karrol can't remember a storm like this.
"There's never been a hail storm that has ruined a crop on this farm," said Karrol.
The hail Wednesday pounded what were once lush farms north, west and east of Greeley. Cabbage was torn to shreds, what were once healthy corn stalks are now mere sticks.
"It looked like snow, but it was actually the hail," said Lydia Villegas.
Hail packed in between rows could freeze and kill the corn overnight. If it doesn't, the damage to the stalk might ruin it in anyway.

Farmers not spared in second day of severe storms
“There's pretty significant crop damage this time. We missed it (Tuesday), but not today,” Hoshiko said. “And it's taking a pretty wide swath.”
He said one field of onions
was chopped off to the ground as were sugar beets, corn and pinto beans.
“The onions might bounce back, but the pintos are gone. "
"Mike Hungenberg of Hungenberg Produce of Greeley called the storm “a disaster.” An early survey of the damage revealed the family farming company lost 100 acres of cabbage — some of which were only three weeks away from being harvested — and 200 acres of carrots.
“We're going to have to replant some cabbage and carrots, but we've got one field of cabbage that was just beat to the ground,” Hungenberg said. He said the damage seemed to be the worst from Greeley to Lucerne, then east from there. He, too, said the corn might bounce back and maybe some of the beans, but damage was going to be extensive."

Delaware Crops Damaged by Hail Storm
Posted: June 10, 2009 03:55 PM EDT
HARTLY, Del. - Severe storms hit the peninsula Tuesday night, dumping large hail on parts of Kent County. On Wednesday farmers discovered considerable damage to some crops.
Farmer Aaron Thompson spent the day surveying his damaged corn crop near Hartly. On Tuesday, his fields fell victim to one of the worst storms in recent memory.
"I just didn't expect this kind of storm out of what we got last night," said Thompson.
Some of the corn he said was ripped to shreds. Thompson said more than 50 percent of his corn crop may be ruined.
"It looks like we have substantial loses out here. The corn plants once broke off won't re-grow," he said.

"Golf-ball-size hail, strong winds and heavy rain from a weekend storm damaged about 27,000 acres of corn in Hall County, especially around Wood River, according to preliminary reports from the Hall County Farm Service Agency."
“If you plant corn, you’re basically farming for the insurance company,” he said. “You would be better to total it out and put a different crop in. Plus, you can transfer milo bushels for corn bushels on your contract at the elevator.”
"Prior to the storm, McCarville said, this year’s crop was nearly picture perfect."

ND spring wheat emergence slowed by weather
Wednesday, June 10, 2009 9:39 AM CDT
Cool, wet weather across North Dakota continues to impact the planting and emergence of the spring wheat crop.
According to the latest Crop Progress Report released by USDA on June 8, spring wheat planting in North Dakota was 94 percent complete, however, it’s likely that the intended acreage of the crop will never be reached. As a result of the late planting and cool weather conditions just 75 percent of the crop has emerged compared to the 5-year average of 96 percent.
While wet weather is actually beneficial for emerging spring wheat, cool temperatures are quite detrimental. Over the weekend (June 6-7), a significant portion of North Dakota had high daytime high temperatures in just the 30s and 40s n 30-35 degrees below the early June normal temperature of the mid 70s.
The late planting and slow emergence is likely to lead to a late harvest for some of the crop. A delayed harvest will put the spring wheat at risk for disease as well as crop damage due to frost.
Temperatures began to moderate on June 9 with highs ranging from 55-65 F. However, morning lows have already dipped to very cold levels in the early morning with Bismarck tying a record of 35 this week.
Fortunately, temperatures should be closer to normal as the weekend approaches with lows near 50 and highs in the 70s by Friday. A few scattered showers or thunderstorms are possible throughout the week, but most areas will only see very light amounts.
