GENESIS 50
Today we finish Genesis.
We see in Chapter 49, the passing of Jacob. In the open of chapter
50, we see Joseph mourn on his father’s deathbed. He has his Egyptian
Servants, the physicians embalm Jacob.
Underline the last statement in vs 2 and all of vs 3 and we see the
process takes 40 days.
This timeline will grow more significant later, but for now, we note
the timeline was significant to the time required in the Egyptian
embalming process, as we see Jacob Mummified.
And we the Egyptians mourn Jacob’s death for 70 days following, so now
110 days have passed and he has not been buried, this number will be
significant even before the end of this chapter.
We see Joseph pleas for Pharaoh to allow him to take his fathers body
back to the burial place of his anscestors, and gain such permission
promising to come again, interesting promise for a Messianic figure,
underline the last statement in vs 5 and also the last in vs 7 and the
last in vs 8.
In your margin, make a note to vs 8-10 and put “WHAT A
FUNERAL”Underline ATAD in vs 10 and ABELMIZRAIM in vs 11 and in the
margin place that ”Atad=Abelmizraim”
Note in vs 10 and 11 before reaching the burial place this whole
procession mourns so greatly and for 7 days to get the attention from
all that live in the land witnessing their huge procession pass
through.
Underline the last statement in vs 13, the first in vs 16, and the
last in vs 17.
They bury Jacob in your margin, next to VS 12 write “Vs 12-Pallbearers”
Then they all go back to Egypt and Josephs brothers get worried he is
going to get even, and they send someone to say to Joseph Jacob gave a
commandment before them for Joseph that he was to forgive them, a
commandment we see no proof of anywhere else and seems convenient,
certainly suspect, and when Joseph hears of it, we see he weeps, they
still did not get it.
And his brothers fall down before him begging mercy, and he is crying
cause they still don’t get it, and he asks them in vs 19, underline
the last statement, “AM I GOD?” and points to them yet again the truth
of the dreams of his youth and that he knows God has wrought all these
events, and he comforts them. Then we see Joseph dies at a young age,
at 110 years old and he tells his brethren something, and underline
all of vs 24, and the last statements in vs 25 and 26 and in the
margin next to vs 24,
Place “vs 24-25 =Messianic Promise/Moses?”
And note what he prophecies to his brothers in vs 25, that they will
carry his bones back into Canaan, but look at what happens to his body
in vs 26, it remains in Egypt, at least for that time being.
