We approaching the Hebrew Month of Sivan, the Seventh month of the
Hebrew year. They have two new years, the official start of the year
on ONE Nissan, about the time of Passover, also called the month of
ABIB, as Abib refers to a stage when the Barely becomes Ripened in the
first Fruits, which by Scriptural mandate plays a role in the
observance of the actual beginning of the Month of Nissan/Abib.
But as we begin our new school years about this timeframe, This
timeframe is to the Hebrews the start of the CIVIL New Year, and a
most holy month, there will be at least 7 Sabbaths to observe this
month.
Got time off coming? Now would perhaps be a good time. No? Well,
now would certainly be a good time to do away with ignorance of this
timeframe and learn more about it don’t you think?
September, the very meaning of the word means in latin “7th month.”
Septa meaning Seven. IT was observed as such prior to the destruction
of Jerusalem in 70 a.d., hence Yehoshua knew the timeframe by many
names, of them, the Roman Calendar, observed in his day, the Seventh
month, about the time of Sivan, SEPTEMBER, and by the death of John
the Revelator, the month of September was noted in the ninth month of
the year. Octa meaning eight, October, Deca meaning ten, December,
would also change order as the Romans added the names or altered to
the names “MARCH” and either January or February I seem to recall, I
believe it was January after Januarius a pagan diety and likewise
March honored a Pagan deity as well.
There is as usual a matter of Calendar confusion to sort through. We
will address that later, for now, we focus on what is clear, by Hebrew
Custom, but moreso by Scriptural mandate. The Primary, not sole
Scriptural text for this study will be Leviticus chapter 23, and as
such, I recommend opening your bibles to the text, reading, then
following this study and making notes accordingly. You can start in
the upper part of the page of Leviticus 23 by writing “The month of
Sivan occurs on varied floating schedule to the Gregorian Between
August and October.” This year, the Roman calendar we observe in the
west, notes the day of 1 SIVAN, on September 18th, 2009 at sunset, it
is a MANDATORY (Additional at times when occurring different than the
weekly) Sabbath. If that date is correct, then this year, it falls
on the same timeframe as the Weekly Sabbath, some years it falls the
day prior and from Sunset Thursday to Sunset Saturday on those years,
is to be no work, likewise some years it follows and starts at Sunset
on Saturday, again to consecutive days of rest.
The 1st of Sivan, the Hebrew 7th month, is also the only time in
Scripture in which SOUNDING THE SHOFAR is mandatory. It is to be
known as “THE Day of trumpets” AND THE Hebrews sound the Shofar 100
times during the timeframe. I see no scriptural mandate for the
number of times to be sounded, only that it is to be sounded on that
day, and it implied to make the day know for such, so hence, sounded
moreso than normal. I have been asked recently if women can sound the
shofar?
The answer is both yes and no. Hebrew custom looks to women not
sounding the shofar at all, but allows that in regions in which no
male lives or is present, exception is made that women may sound the
shofar in that timeframe as it is a commandement that it be sounded
and the day observed “IN ALL THY DWELLINGS.”
The companion text to this study serving as additional commentary will
be “THE Complete Idiot’s Guide to: Understanding Judaism” by Rabbi
Benjamin Blech.
Here is first the general outline of events, of course you have the
regular weekly Sabbaths to observe in this timeframe and the
corresponding events then we will go into more detail to understanding
the customs of the timeframe, their scriptural mandate or traditional
origins, and keep in mind at one point, all those living on the earth
whom are here during the time of the New Jerusalem as it sits on the
Mountain which comes up from the earthquake in Zecheriah 14, all in
that timeframe will be required to go up to Jerusalem to keep this
festival, or there will be consequences which will bring famine and
death.
