Tuesday, EXODUS 3 vs 1 Thru 8
In vs 1 we see Moses now a shepherd, keeping the flock for his father
in law, JETHRO. Wait a second,
I thought his father in law was named Reul? Well he was, and we see
such in Chapter 2. But he was also named Jethro, for that matter
later on we see he had a couple other names as well, called Hobab in
Judges 4:11, and Raguel in Numbers 10:29. But here he is called
Jethro and it is noted he was JETHRO THE PRIEST OF MIDIAN. So,
while not too rich, he was a man of some influence in the community,
he was the priest of an entire region. Now this may give insight to
the use of the name here, as it may have been his PUBLIC title
associated with his priesthood as the name Jethro literally means “HIS
EXCELLENCY.” But he is the Father in Law of Moses, and we know
therefore the same man as “REUL” the father of the two girls whom
Moses defended at the well in Midian in chapter 2 of Exodus.
In vs 2, we see Moses meets the Angel of the Lord who appears to him
in a burning bush. Now let me illuminate here, and scripture will
support such as we continue, that there is a specific type of bush in
that part of the world known for bursting into flames, and to this
very day. It’s called “THE BURNING BUSH” and it may have a proper
name, but is known for such, as the bushes in the right climate
conditions will spontaneously burst into flames. What got the
attention of Moses, was not the fact that the Bush burst into flames,
but the fact that “IT WAS NOT CONSUMED” and you can see this in the
last statement in vs 2, and underline that in your bibles. Then it is
emphasized more clearly, and underline as well the last statement in
vs 3
“And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, WHY
THE BUSH IS NOT BURNT.”
You see Moses Turned aside, he was going somewhere else, and the sight
of the burning bush may have caught his attention, as the bushes are
known not just to burst into flames, but sometimes to roll away
burning like tumbleweeds, so, yeah, I’d pay attention for a moment or
two as well, especially with all the 4 legged wool walking around in
my care. But the burning does not incite Moses to investigate, it is
the LACK OF BURNING, the fact the bush is on fire, but is not being
consumed.
Then When the Lord saw Moses turned aside to see, GOD called to him
from the bush. And Moses says, “Here AM I”…who is Moses talking too,
does he say, “YES GOD…” no, he says, “I AM OVER HERE.”
Moses doesn’t immediately get the source of the bush, as we see he
illustrates no immediate reverence, only curiosity, and then he
instructed to show reverence, isn’t that something? All these
generations, God fell silent, not having much respect for his people,
and now Moses, he doesn’t even know how to show any reverence, and
God, he is okay with that, but Moses isn’t excused, still, not
condemned for his lack of reverence, his ignorance to how to handle
this divine visitation, and God instructs him first, letting him know,
to take off his shoes for he is standing on Holy Ground, and then God
goes on to introduce himself to Moses and tell him about himself.
Isn’t that something, all these generations, and they remembered God,
but not enough so that one could be aware who was talking when the
event occurred, I really get this, I do, and I am not faulting Moses,
just noting how great God was in the situation to overlook his
ignorance and instruct him. Now once Moses knows it’s God, he knows
enough to hide his face, and he is afraid to look upon God.
Now Underline the 1st statement in vs 8, and in your margin write “vs
8 C.R. – Gen 50:24,25”
and we will stop there for today, and as we close note that God is
about to send Moses to Egypt, and the prophecy of Joseph was not that
God would send a man, but that GOD himself would deliver Israel back
into the land of their fathers. And Pharaoh, Raamses II by most
accounts, and the Israelites, will meet again Moses again, but it will
be God whom they will deal with, and we will see again as God
announces his name, a reference to Genesis 2, to the Memorial of
Generations, the very Mystery of God. Even with Moses, Christ Moses,
we see at the heart of his mission, a defining moment to reveal to his
people those given to his charge, the Mystery of God, later we see
such with Yehoshua, John alludes to the future generations a time such
would again be likewise, and we ourselves, as those concerned with the
same as David brought to heart the matter, will ourselves likewise be
concerned with the Mystery of God.
When we get to vs 15, we will see the title “THE LORD GOD” in
association with the memorial of all generations, both the title of
the one creating in Genesis 2, as well as the nature of the mystery,
that of Generations.
You are probably wondering why this study is so short, well, I was
told to only cover vs 1 thru 8, then to highlight vs 15, told so of
the Spirit, and tomorrow we pick back up at vs 9. But there is a lot
of information not so easily seen in scripture, truths you need to be
aware of. I want you to research the history of the title “THE LORD”
as it applies to it’s use in history, particularly it’s origins and
ties to the land of CANAAN. And the chronology by which it came to be
used by the Hebrews, likewise the title “EL” also in same fashion how
the Hebrews came to use it, and it’s prior origins to the land of
Canaan, and we will see some important details, most of which the
reason for distinction, that Issac NEVER DWELT IN THE PART OF CANAAN
Where Jacob Dwelt in the latter part of his life. The land promised
to Abraham, to Isaac was indeed in CANAAN, And Israel, the actual
nation, geographically the land would be formed in the same region
after the Israelites conquered Canaan. As to the region Jacob/Israel
dwelt after Rachel’s death, Isaac his father, he may have passed
through, but he never dwelt there. How do we know this, well, go back
to Genesis 37:1 and underline two statements in the whole verse, the
last half of the 1st statement prior to the comma in the sentence, and
the last statement entirely:
“And Jacob dwelt in the land WHEREIN HIS FATHER WAS A STRANGER, IN THE
LAND OF CANAAN.”
