Exodus Chapter 5
In the last few verses of Exodus 4, we see the intro to chapter 5 as Moses enters Egypt, and meets with Aaron his brother. He tells him what has happened and the signs he is to show, and they gathered the elders of the people and Aaron Spake and Moses showed them the signs.
In Chp 5 vs 1, underline the last sentence in that verse and in your margin write “V1 CR Ex 3:18- NOT WHAT THEY WERE TOLD TO SAY.”
Now we see here Moses and Aaron tell Pharaoh in Vs 1 that “Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.” Did they do what God told them to do? NO, not at all, that is absolutely not what God told them to say to Pharaoh upon their encn their encounter with him. Interesting though, they were thinking about partying and feasting first and foremost, so that upon encounter with Pharaoh, they failed to say what they were told to say. What they were told to say is recorded in Exodus 3:18…”and ye shall say unto him, THE LORD GOD OF THE HEBREWS HATH MET WITH US: AND NOW LET US GO WE BESEECH THEE, THREE DAYS JOURNEY INTO THE WILDERNESS THAT WE MAY WE MAY SACRIFICE TO THE LORD OUR GOD.”
Now, they were told to say they were to go 3 days journey into the wilderness to SACRIFICE to God, not hold a feast. Now maybe they planned on doing both, but they were not supposed to tell Pharaoh they were going to hold a feast. Lest you think it is the same thing, let’s continue…
In vs 2 Pharaoh takes his dangerous position, “Who is the Lord…I don’t know him.” First of all, they were supposed to Tell Pharaoh that The LORD God had met with them and commanded them to say a thing to him, which they did not say, and many were expecting Moses to perform another miracle as they had already witnessed before approaching Pharaoh and hence Pharaoh would just buckle. So Pharaoh says “NOPE, NOT DOING IT.” Now Aaron in verse 3 finally tells Pharaoh the message, but now, he’s not leaving out anything he was told to say, he is changing what he was told to say and now he is adding to the word of God, and he says…”The Lord God of the Hebrews hath met with us: Let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the DESERT, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God: LEST HE FALL UPON US WITH PESTILENCE OR WITH THE SWORD.”
God never said anything about going into the DESERT, so we see they are still struggling to get the message right in the presence of Pharaoh, though now they do get the first part of the message right and tell Pharaoh “THE LORD GOD OF THE HEBREWS HATH MET WITH US.” But once they stray and now have asked to goto the wilderness first, and now the desert, they continue going into the ditch by adding to the word of God and say “Lest he fall upon us with pestilence or the Sword.” They weren’t supposed to say that, not at all.
For that matter “THEY”as verse 3 starts that “ And THEY (Moses AND Aaron) Said” weren’t to be speaking at all, at this point Only Aaron is supposed to be speaking the content of that which Moses told him in Exodus 4:29 and Speaking alone by the Mandate of God in Exodus 4:15.
