Constant licking may be due to the following reasons. 1. Boredom if your dog does not get proper exercise she will lick herself from boredom. 2. Metabolic wastes and toxins from chemicals and commercial foods are forced out through the skin. The skin is an organ of elimination (an excretory organ). Natures design is to channel waste to the least critical organ system in this case the skin. Where is this stuff coming from? Often it is from commercial dog foods, and chemicals found in chewable heartworm drugs, flea preventative spot treatments, rawhide chew toys (processed with chemicals) and other treats. I suggest having a vet examine your dog. If there is no serious disease process at work - you will find an easy solution to this problem by simply feeding a natural home-prepared diet (raw, cooked and combination diets available at our site) for several weeks. Eliminating all the toxins from her system will leave her sweet smelling. Remember, this is not an overnight fix. It will take several weeks (6 8) to de-toxify your dog. Along with the diet, regular exercise and daily brushing will stimulate the skin to speed up the process. At our website (naturalcanine.com) we have several excellent herbal supplements (Hokamix) and herbal Detox Tinctures that are safe and effective to use with the diet. The reason the grooming only helps for a short time is because this is a problem brewing from within your dog. It is not a localized skin problem. You need to address the root cause. Constant bathing is not good because the shampoos disturb the natural bacterial mantle on your dogs skin. This bacterium is necessary to help your dog repel parasites and keep the skin healthy. What you are dealing with is coming from inside your dog and you need to address the source of he problem. Smelly skin is only a symptom not the dis-ease.
