Quitting is a process which doesn't happen immediately, but the decision to quit does have to be made and followed through. People can quit smoking, but it is difficult. To some extent, those who quit smoking spend the rest of their lives quitting, as one is always susceptible to nicotine, like alcoholics are susceptible to alcohol. It will be easier for you than it would be for many others of us, but it will be difficult for you too.
Most people who quit have lapses and smoke a few, then quit again. If it happens, don't beat yourself up about it. Try to quit with your friend(s). If they don't want to quit, just do it for yourself, at least until basketball is over. Good luck on the court.
Take it one day at a time. Exercise is good because it causes some of the same brain chemicals to be released as nicotine does, so it can substitute. Try to occupy your mind with something else if you start thinking about smoking. Music is probably better than trying to read or watching tv. It may not be your taste in music, but Beethoven Symphonies (numbers 3,6,9 and others are available on youtube at no cost) and Sonatas (I like the Tempest Sonata especially) have a way of occupying my mind when I start thinking about how bad things are in my life.
Smokers aren't evil and smoking isn't evil, but it has consequences, short term and long term, which need to be recognized. In your case, from what you have been posting, the consequences are enough to quit over. Perhaps in the future things will be different. But for now at least: QUIT, and learn from all this. Among other things, learn compassion for others in tough situations, even if they make or have made mistakes which have put themselves in a bad situation (I don't mean to say that you don't already have compassion...).
Good luck.
