Basically if going without cigarettes were no harder than going without something else you really like, like chocolate, or listening to your favourite band or whatever, would that change your smoking habits?
For my part, I think it would, but only a little. I still wouldn't stop, or even cut down all that much - some days if I didn't need to worry about getting even more addicted I might even smoke more than I currently do. But I'd probably space my cigarettes differently - I'd probably cut it out almost entirely in the evening, and smoke a bit less before work, and it would be nice to be able to get through a meeting at work, or a long train journey without needing to worry about finding time for a smoke.
But I think I'd be even less likely to ever quit than I am now - if it were controllable there'd be no point at all to quitting.
