Hi Debbie, although golf seems complex it can be broken down into parts and easier to digest. First, start with a certified teaching professional who teaches more than he/she works inside a golf shop. Any teacher who makes a living teaching should be well qualified. As an LPGA teacher I find it easiest for most students to begin with the smallest swing first..the putt! You don't have to be athletic to swing a putter but you will learn a lot about swing path, the face of the club, aim, direction, stance, posture and much of the etiquette of the game. It's fun to practice with your family and it requires one club and one ball. If you find that you enjoy practicing and have the time and money to invest in lessons and equipment you can move forward from there. Pls consider joining other women like yourself for one of my Women's Golf Camps this summer. More information is on my web page www.pros2gogolf.com. Have fun!
