The busiest part of the Florida bass guiding season has been in full swing for the past two months. A lot of big fish have been caught solely on wild shiners. I have taken people from all parts of the U.S and Canada.
The majority of my trips have been on Lake Tohopekaliga. This lake, despite receiving tremendous guiding and tournament pressure, continually produces quality fish in the 5-9 lb range, with the occasional fish over 10 lbs. Sometimes it appears they are spoiled by shiners, as artificials used in the same areas are not very effective. Largest customer fish to date with me has been 11 lbs even.
I have also taken people to the Butler Chain of Lakes west of Orlando. This is probably the prettiest and bassiest looking chain in central Florida. It has clear water and deep weedlines very similar to the lakes in New York. Again shiners are most effective but artificials can work here more consistently than at Toho. Butler Chain can be fished the same way as the clear lakes in New York. Wacky rig senkos and jerk baits are effective along with finesse type baits. Fish over 10 lbs are here, but this chain is better for producing numbers in the 4-6 lb range.
I'm already looking forward to my first guide trip in New York. Despite the great weather and big bass down here, I still miss the great bass fishing in New York. Especially those wonderful smallmouth!! (God I wish they had those in Florida).
Hang in there. Bass Season will be here soon!
