Guided Bass TripsFriday I conducted my first Guided Bass Trip of the season on Chaumont Bay.
I picked up Al, Denise, and their son Dan at Long Point State Park. It was 48 degrees and the wind was blowing from the Northwest. The smallmouth fishing was very spotty for Chaumont. We actually caught more largemouth. It may have just been a tough day, cool and bright, but it's hard not to think the smallmouth are also still in their post-spawn recovery. This has been a strange summer. I have a trip scheduled there for later this month that should be more productive. Chaumont is an awesome fishery, generally producing smallmouth in the 4 and 5 lb class. But is also a changing fishery. The water is not as clear as in the past. Maybe due to the wind and rain this year but also the fact that the zebra mussels may be on the decline. The gobies are also now well established. In theory this could be causing it to be more of a deep water fishery than in the past, eliminating that easy topwater and spinnerbait fishing we are all so accustomed to with Chaumont. We'll see how the next trip goes.
Until then, good fishin'.
