Hi Larry,
The smallmouth bass in the St. Lawrence River will probably still be located in the 40-50 foot range the first week of October. That has been the key depth all summer. On other bodies of water the smallmouth will come shallower in early October but the St. Lawrence is different. The clear water and their desire for current and gobies should keep them deeper.
What you may see different from August is a better bite because of more fish grouped in one spot. Try using the drop shot technique which is a weight positioned 1-2 feet under your hook. You can put just about anything on the hook. The goby imitation baits are popular now.
The real key to success is being on fish and your boat positioning. Electronics are very important. You will usually see the fish on the screen. If you don't have good electronics, the best areas to chose are the side of a shoal or island that breaks the fastest into deep water. It is also important to have current.
Good luck in October.
