Posted by Slowpoke Yes, this swap has been done before, but it was only an engine swap. I believe that it was written up in the Toyota Land Cruiser Association's newsletter, the Toyota Trails. But, the swap was done to an FJ45 wagon. They made an adapter plate to mate the engine to the bell housing and a spacer on the crank shaft to set the flywheel back the correct amount. I don't think that the vehicle's weight will be any problem. This is because a friend of mine had weighed his `75 FJ40 a few years back and it tipped the scales at 4,250 Lbs. Now, my 4Runner, which happens to be powered by 22R, weighs 4,100 Lbs. and it does just fine in the power department. I'm pretty sure that the engine/tranny/transfer case in your FJ40 weigh a lot more than the 22r/tranny/transfer case out of a mini truck. So, you would actually see a reduction in vehicle weight. Here's where I think that you'd run into trouble, the over all length of the 22r/tranny/transfer case. The 3 speed tranny in your 40 is only about 8 inches long and the transfer case is about 10 inches long, for a total length of 18 inches. The tranny, I presume that you'd use the 5 speed, out of the mini truck is 25 3/4 inches long and the transfer case is 12 3/4 inches long, for a total length of 38 1/2 inches. That's 20 inches longer than what is in your 40 right now. If you were lucky and could move the engine forward 10 inches, which I don't think you could, that would still push the rear output back 10 inches. If you research any of the other swaps being done to FJ40s, then you will find that that is an awful lot in the FJ40s and you end up with a very short drive shaft and other problems. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with your FJ40. Later, Slowpoke
