Noticed you guys were planning to go to Silverton... I lived in Durango for six years. As you probably know, there are several passes that criss cross over the molas/coal creek/red mountain passes... they can take you over to Telluride etc. Another spot to hit is to take Hwy 160 west from Durango to Hesperus, on the north side of the hwy is a motel/restaurant... if you turn north there it'll take you into the La Plata Mountains. Don't forget Lizard Head pass either...
