I turn an l into er by having the kids "paint" the roof of the mouth, bringing the tongue backward. Try it. The tongue tip is up behind the teeth (alveolar ridge) bringing it back while continuing to vocalize, makes an excellent r after trying it a while. Actually, it sounds like llllleeeerrrr.
