tongue thrusting

At what age should one consider a child for speech therapy for a tongue thrust/ problems with /s/? Is 6 too early? Should I condsider waiting and seeing if he will self-correct it? Or look into therapy now? I have read tongue thrusting is difficult to correct in therapy, is this true?
