Posted by dawnslp The way to test for a tongue thrust is to have the child put a small sip of water in their mouth and hold it. They will then open their lips so they can see their teeth and swallow. If they have a tongue thrust, this will be VERY hard if not impossible to do and some water may spill out their teeth. The children you wrote about above, what about social-emotional factors related to their incorrect speech....especially in 3rd grade? You might want to consider testing the kindergarten child, b/c lisping on all sibilants can be a problem and is usually a moderate delay when you test.

Are you referring to a tongue thrust or a frontal lisp? You probably already know this, but they are not the same. The tongue thrust is a reverse swallow pattern that will typically affect dentition due to the pressure of the tongue on the teeth at rest and during sleep (I am not sure it happens during swallowing because it's not enough sustained pressure over a long period of time, but it could happen during sleep).
