Posted by nstinson When I first started teaching these two steps together, I was grasping for any "Trick" to help this one certain student understand how to get the tongue up and back. He had not been successful with any traditional methods. When he tried this approach, he hit the 'r' on the first try. He was so excited! He said, "Oh, that's how it's done!" He was dismissed several months later. Always remember, sometimes what we learn in books, are not the best for every child. I may not have used a traditional way, but it worked. Again, I am from the old school. I am not very technical ad I am open to try new ways of teaching. After 21 years, I have found what works for some of my students and for others I will coninue to search. Thanks for responding back! Nstinson

Technically, it is. However, I have not had any trouble with carryover. Our dialect in the south may have something to do with the success of this approach. The sound produced first is the vowel /r/. And when the child masters how the tongue goes up and back, the consonant "r" seems to fall into place.
