Hi,
I work with at-risk preschool children and I have one child who is just a little bit 'odd'. I have recommended a referal every time that I have met with the parents but they are absolutely sure that he will grow out of it. He turned 4 last September and is almost totally unintelligible. We have learned to interpret some of his speech but mostly because he is very good at non-verbal communication. He also has some motor difficulties and I suspect that the two are related. He has multiple, severe food allergies and is very defensive about food choices. I have played with him trying to get him to do some simple oral motor activities but I am wondering if it would be advisable to give some activities to his parents to do over the summer. Is there anything that should be avoided before he has been assessed by a Speech Therapist? I have a BS in SLP/A and worked in the field for a couple of years before going into Early Childhood but it was a long time ago and I don't have access to anything along those lines (we are supposed to refer to the Speech Therapist in cases like this :)).
I am sorry, this is very long-winded but I am concerned about this little guy. Any suggestions you might have for things I can do or how I can get the parents to accept a referal would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Rondee
