How do you know he does not have a submucousal cleft? Has the child seen an ENT yet? You are correct, both of those are signs of that type of cleft palate. I used to work in a cleft palate clinic.. and I've seen kids who didn't have bifid uvula, zona pellucida, or any other obvious signs-- who absolutely had submucousal cleft and were severely hypernasal. It's hard to identify this condition and it sounds like this student might need nasendoscopy to visualize the top of the soft palate!
