Technically, hypernasality can linger for up to 6 months post surgery. However, if you are seeing other signs like you mentioned, I wouldn't expect complete return of his pre op voice. The doctor will wait that time period to see if there is improvement though.
He may be guarding his throat due to soreness and showing signs of limited labial excursion. With prompts to open his mouth more and focus on enunciating for more precise speech, you may see some improvement. Opening his mouth will minimize the pharyngeal space and help with velopharyngeal closure during speech.
If improvement does not occur over time, the doctor will need to intervene.
