Then I have the child say five sounds for each of the items. Depending on the child's age, I might have them drop each item into a slot or bucket after saying the five sounds. Having different colors allows me to vary it when we get to the syllable level (e.g., for all green ones say "tay," all yellow ones say "tee", etc).

I always try to start my session with 100 repetitions of a target sound a child has success with that is close to what I'm going to work on next. I do this as a warmup and it is amazing how well it gets the child's mouth in position for the next sound or level. You could do this with the non-backed sounds your student is successful with, just as a warmup.
