They do amplify the child's voice in his own ears and allow him to hear and focus on his voice or sound production better. The two drawbacks I've found are 1)that the mouth portion makes it difficult for the therapist to actually see the child's mouth and it may actually make it harder for the therapist to hear what the child is saying and 2)the few children I've had try it soon got too embarassed to wear it in front of others in the group because it looks so dorky to them. Pretending it was some Star Wars space thingy didn't do the trick. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did. It is cheap enough in cost that having one on hand couldn't hurt.
