The racing season is beginning to wind down at the Southern New Mexico Speedway as only 4 weeks now remains as the Renegade Sprint Car Series made their way to the Speedway for Labor Day Weekend in their second to last appearance of the 2009 season. Along with the RSCS, the Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks, Car Parts Machine Xtreme Modifieds, and the Legends were all in action.
With a still very tacky race track, the Legends of the Southwest were underway as the green flag waved with the 73 of Duane Murphy showed the way but it wouldn’t be long as the 54 of Dylan Harris made the move to the race lead as the caution waved with only a few laps in the books. On the restart, the 54 of Harris would begin got stretch his lead early as the battle for second would see the 3d of Don Reynolds and the 73 of Duane Murphy go side by side with the 3d making the pass. By a half straight, the 3d would continue to work on trying to run down race leader Dylan Harris. As the leaders ran away, Harris by a half straight over Reynolds and Reynolds by a full straight over the battle for third as the 73 of Duane Murphy would be challenged by Morgan Wright in 32 with Wright making the pass for third. Back to the leaders and Reynolds was on the move as the 3d continued to close the gap on the 54 of Harris as the white flag waved. Within 5 car lengths the 3d would run just short as the 54 of Dylan Harris would win. Reynolds would take second with Morgan Wright third with Vince Malone and Greg Campbell rounding out the top five.
The Car Parts Machine Xtreme Modifieds hit the track and M16 of Joshua Gallardo would show the way early on but it wouldn’t be for long as the 18 of Jonathan Burton would fly by to grab the race lead with 18 laps left to run. Pulling away, the battle on the track was for fifth as Paddy Rush and James Fleming went side by side with the 52 of Rush making the pass, leaving the 999 of Fleming to battle with the 96 of Dusty Riggs as Riggs would take the 999 and the 52 but on the low line, the 52 of Rush would get the 96 of Riggs and the 82 of Sherman Barnett as both cars skated high, leaving the low line open off of turn two as the caution would wave for the 93 of Greg Gorham. Back to green flag racing, the 18 of Burton would again pull away as the battle for position was now for second as the M16 of Joshua Gallardo would break and make his way off the track, leaving the field to race and the 71 of Donald Gorham running second. Back in the field, a good three car battle with Riggs, Rush, and Barnett continued with all three drives using every square inch of racing surface as the caution waved for Michael Gonzales. Back to green flag racing and Burton was unstoppable as the 18 pulled away with the battle raging for third as Paddy Rush and Dusty Riggs ran side by side but as the checkered flag waved, the 18 of Jonathan Burton would win with Donald Gorham, Paddy Rush, Dusty Riggs, and Sherman Barnett rounding out the top five.
The Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks with the green flag waving would see the 10gt of Travis Harrison showing the way as Joseph Granado would go sideways with a flat right rear tire as the field would split the 7j, with all drivers doing a good job of not making any contact. With the laps clicking off, the 10gt continued to show the way with the 3lt of Leland Harrison running second as the 3 of Patrick Beach made his way into third, pulling right up to the 3lt to make the pass for second. With Beach up to second, the 3 would start to run down Harrison as Beach would make the pass for the lead as the 10gt would go three wide for third with Donovan Flores and Tyler Jackson going high and low with 07 coming out of the battle on top as the caution would wave for Mercedes Harris. On the restart, the 3 of Patrick Beach would lead the field the green with only 12 laps remaining with Nicky Rivera right on the back bumper of the 3 but Patrick Beach would pull away as Donovan Flores began to work on Rivera for second as the 07 would make the pass and go to work on Patrick Beach. Side by side, the 3 of Beach and the 07 of Flores would battle for the race lead with Flores stealing it away as the caution waved. With only a few laps to run, the green flag would wave and the battle for second was on as Rivera, Beach, and Medina would battle but a flat tire would take the 8n of Rivera to the pits two laps shy of the checkered flag and as the race came to an end, Donovan Flores would win. Patrick Beach would take second with Kenny Medina, Vanessa Robinson, and Tyler Jackson rounding out the top five.
In a solid 4-Wide salute to the fans, the Renegade Sprint Car Series prepared to go 30 laps of racing with Sonny Holden and Lamar Skarda leading the 20 car field to the drop of the green flag. Lap one, and Sonny Holden showed the way a the battle for second saw the 7c of John Carney make the move on Skarda but it would not last long as the 51 of Skarda would take the position back. On the move, the F7 of Cesar Fuentes would make the pass up to third over the 7c of Carney, going to work on the 51 of Skarda for second with the F7 making the pass and working on running down Sonny Holden. In lapped traffic, the 81 of Holden was still keeping good distance between himself and Fuentes would now be challenged by the 51 of Lamar Skarda and the 3s of John Carney II as the battle would go three wide with Carney to the bottom and up to second but in the high side, Cesar Fuentes would power by on the high side to take back second. With the battle for second was going on, the track was changing and Holden would be held up in lapped traffic as the setup began to fade on the 81, bringing the battle for second to Holden’s back bumper and Cesar Fuentes within striking distance as the F7 dove low with a slide job to grab the race lead with Carney making the move from fourth to second as the 3s made the pass on Lamar Skarda and Sonny Holden on the low line with caution following shortly there after for Wes Wofford who was running in fifth. Half way home and the green flag waving, the F7 would get a great jump on Carney but the caution would wave yet again, this time for Mike Wells. Back underway, the caution would continue to plague the RSCS A-Main just as the 3s of Carney made the move for the race lead; the 99 of Chuck Jackson would spin. Single file yet again, and the F7 would get a good restart but on the high side, the 518 of Lorne Wofford was on the move as he bolted up into third and was running down the leaders as the F7 and the 3s went side by side for the race lead with Fuentes on the high line and the 3s on the low line with Fuentes holding the lead as the 518 of Lorne Wofford blowing by the 3s of Carney for second. On the back bumper of the F7, the 518 of Wofford looked high with no luck as the 518 switched lines to the bottom but would still be denied but down the back straight, Wofford would push the limits as the driver of the 518 timed the push of Cesar Fuentes off the corner to grab the lead with a very tight high line pass and only a hand full of laps to run. Back to second, the F7 would again have to contend with Carney as the 3s would make the pass but would run out of time as the 518 of Lorne Wofford built an impressive lead as the checked flag fell. John Carney II would take second with Cesar Fuentes, Kyle Sager, and Lamar Skarda rounding out the top five.
