Both systems perform well -- I prefer the Halon system ( FireBottleRacing.com ) Alex Kennedy has had an automatic activated bottle in every car he has driven since he was 9 years old. I chose Halon for the following reasons -- You can see thru it to get out of the car. You can breath it without harm. Little or no cleanup if it goes off accidentally. The bottle discharges for 28 seconds giving you that much more time to exit the vehicle. This system will auto-activate at 180 degrees -- or the driver can pull the handle. It doesn't freeze sitting in a cold trailer.
But the real reason I chose halon is a video I watched of three stock cars piled into and on top of each other. All three caught fire. ONE car pulled his FireBottle and the 25 foot disbursement of Halon put out all three cars.
Most sources agree that the US has a 30 year supply of Halon. Halon is more expensive to refill -- but I have never had to refill one.
Carbon X underwear and headsock are also important. Your double layer suit prevents 2nd degree burns for up to 19 seconds -- CarbonX underwear buys you another 19 seconds. CarbonX also wicks moisture away from your skin. This actually cools you in a hot car and prevents the sweat on your skin from boiling and scalding you in the event of a fire. Practice exiting your car with all your stuff on. If you have to take off your helmet to get out of your car you can get in a bind pretty quick.
There are lots of options available to the drivers -- pick one and practice, practice, practice. I sure do not know everything about all the different options out there so I rely on SFI and NASCAR to inform and certify the systems we use. The system we use costs about 400.00 -- about the cost of a set of tires.
Complete CarbonX underwear is about 230.00
( Head sock - Top - Bottom - Socks. )
